Fig. 7.8. shows an electric locomotive. It collects current from overhead equipment through sliding contact by means of a pantograph. The air circuit breaker is provided on the roof of the locomotive and its main function is to disconnect the locomotive from high voltage supply.

By means of on-load tap changer, output voltage can be varied for speed control of traction motors. By means of transformer high voltage is reduced to utilization level. By means of rectifier a.c is converted into d.c.
Smoothing choke reduces the alternating components of rectified direct current. It acts as a filter. The smoothing choke reduces the undesirable effects on the proper working of an induction motor such as commutation and uneven heating.
