For the efficient running of pumps and maintaining the discharge in the pipe line, certain valves are fitted in the pipe line at various positions. A foot valve is provided just at the bottom of the suction pipe, for holding the water in the suction pipe because it will not allow the downward flow of water and will prevent priming of the pump.
A reflux or check valve is provided after the pump in the rising mains to prevent the back flow of water when the pump is stopped during repairs or non-supply hours. This valve will also prevent the pump against damage from back water surges of pressure.
On the outlet side one gate-valve is also provided to close the pipe during repair of the pump. In case the pump is installed below the water level in the storage reservoir from where it has to pump, one gate valve is also necessary on the suction side, otherwise water will flow out during repairs.
To prevent the bursting and damage of the rising mains, pressure relief valve is provided, which will not allow the increase of pressure after certain safe limit. Such pressure relief valves are utmost necessary in case of reciprocating pumps.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Pressure gauges must be installed on the suction as well as delivery sides of the pumps, which will show the pressures in the pipe lines.
Sometimes the recording type metres are also provided on the pipe lines to measure the quantity of the water pumped.
